The Colorado Rapids Major League Soccer (MLS) team was founded in 1996 and is part of the MLS Western Conference. The team's home field is the 18,000-seat Dick's Sporting Goods Park nine miles north of downtown Denver, Colorado. The stadium itself is surrounded by a 24-field lighted soccer complex and is considered the largest and most state-of-the-art stadium and field complex in the world. The 2007 MLS season opener marked the first game played on this field. The Rapids appropriately defeated powerhouse D.C. United by a score of 2-1.
Going into the 2010 season, the Rapids are ranked #6. The team is scheduled to open its 2010 season on March 26 when it faces off against Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. The Rapids' first home game will be on April 3 when the Chicago Fire comes to town. The Rapids have a full schedule during the months of April and May that includes games against tough opponents D.C. United, Toronto Football Club (FC), and Los Angeles Galaxy. The Rapids then get some well-deserved rest during June. However, the players will be back with their game faces on for their July 4 home matchup with the New York Red Bulls.
The Rapids recently signed forward Conor Casey to a three-year deal. Casey is straight off a franchise record-setting 16 goals during his 2009 season. He began his professional soccer career in Germany then signed with the Toronto FC in 2007. Soon after, he was acquired by the Rapids. During his time
with Colorado, he has scored 29 goals in 60 games and ranks fourth all-time in team scoring. In 2009, Casey earned MLS All-Star honors and was named to the MLS Best XI squad. Casey scored two goals in the U.S. National Team's game against Honduras last October, securing the Americans a spot in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
With a Rapids' single-season record 12 assists that also tied him for a league record in the 2009 season, forward Omar Cummings is another standout. Considered one of the most dangerous strikers in the MLS, Cummings scored a single-season career high eight goals for the Rapids during 2009. With statistics like these, it's clear to see why Cummings was named as the Rapids 2009 Most Valuable Player.
Goalkeeper Matthew Pickens had 36 saves during the 2009 season which was his first season with the Colorado Rapids. Pickens, who was acquired by Colorado in a trade after playing his entire MLS career with the Chicago Fire, earned himself a Top 10 spot in the league for wins and shutouts. Pickens has been a standout at goal since his college days at Southwest Missouri State where he finished second on the all-time chart in goals against average (1.25) and fifth in saves with 191.
